Express report of the Round 11
by John B. Henderson
Is Magnus Carlsen, a blond teenager from a remote
town in Norway, the real deal and set to become the hottest property in chess since Garry Kasparov? Quite possible.
Carlsen, 16, comes from Lommedalen, a small town of only 5,000 - yet he could put his hometown firmly on the map with a stunning debut in the Morelia-Linares super-tournament,
with a defining performance that looks set to announce his arrival on the elite stage of world chess.
In late May, he plays in the candidates' matches for a spot in September's world championship tournament in Mexico - in the process becoming the youngest to do since Bobby Fischer. In Linares, despite the setback of a
defeat in the previous round to his co-leader Vishy Anand, Carlsen showed he's now a force to reckon with by immediately bouncing back into contention by defeating former three-time Linares winner Vassily Ivanchuk.

Carlsen wasted no time in overpowering Ivanchuk's suspect idea of 15 ...Qe7 in the Grünfeld, with a deadly attack that netted two pawns for a piece. Now, going into the home straight, Carlsen,
on +3, looks to be hungry for success and is only a half point off the lead and a point clear of the chasing pack. Could we be seeing history in the making?

We’re quite happy to be able to present a new video at Chessvibes.com from
Linares by Macauley Peterson (Macauley). He filmed the post mortem of one of the best games of the tournament so far: Morozevich-Leko from
round nine, played last Saturday. |
And he added a new feature: a few times you will see an animated chess set, to clarify a few of the positions the two GMs are talking about. GMs in order of appearance: Alexander Morozevich, Peter
Leko, Arshak Petrosian, and Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Have fun!

Chessvibes.com
The Chessvibes team presents some fragments
of the second round. Vassily Ivanchuk and Peter Leko seem to be the biggest wanderers. Especially Leko is quite interested in other positions. Also, the post-mortem games Anand-Svidler and Leko-Morozevich. |
